How to Add a GitHub Repository to Claude: Files, Sync & Limits

You can give Claude the files behind your website so it can explain how they fit together. Be clear about whether you are adding repository context or connecting a tool that can change the project.

Add GitHub files to a Claude chat

1. Open the + menu in a chat and choose Add from GitHub.
2. Authenticate if prompted, then select the relevant files and folders.
3. Send a question about those files.

Add a repository to a project

In project knowledge, choose + → GitHub, select the repository and choose its files. Use the project's sync control after the source changes. Anthropic documents both flows in its GitHub integration guide.

What does this integration include?

The built-in integration supplies selected files from a branch. It does not supply commit history or pull-request metadata, and it does not push changes. Tools for issues, pull requests or code changes are a separate capability with their own permissions. Integration limits.

That distinction matters when you ask, "What changed this week?" A set of current files alone cannot establish a history of changes.

Try a question you can verify

Start with the README and one relevant page. Ask: "Explain where this site's contact form sends an inquiry. Name the files you used and tell me what you cannot verify from them. Do not change anything."

Check the named files and test the real contact flow separately. Source code can explain intended behavior; it cannot prove that a production form delivered an email.

If a private repository is missing

Confirm that your GitHub account can access it. Organization approval or single sign-on authorization may be required. Follow the organization's access process rather than making a private repository public to solve a connection problem. See the official troubleshooting guidance.
