How to Connect Google Drive to Claude: Setup & Permissions

Find the document first, then check that Claude used the right source. That is a useful starting point for connecting Google Drive to Claude, whether you are finding a proposal, a checklist or notes from a meeting.

Connect Google Drive to Claude

1. In Claude, open Customize → Connectors and choose Google Drive.
2. Connect your Google account and review the requested access. Work accounts may need an administrator's approval.
3. Enable the connector in your chat, then ask for one document you can already open in Drive.

Test it with a document you know

Try: "Find the checklist called Sample Project Handover. Link the source and summarize the next three actions. Do not edit or share anything."

Open the returned link yourself. Check the document title, which project it belongs to and whether the answer matches the contents. Use a harmless test document before introducing private client work.

Does the connection let Claude edit files?

Searching Drive and editing a Google document are different capabilities. Anthropic lists Docs, Sheets and Slides as separate connectors. Check the tools and permissions actually enabled in your account before asking for edits or file actions. A connection is not a guarantee that every file type or action is supported. If Claude cannot find the file

Open the file in Drive with the same Google account. Check the account, sharing permissions and connector status. Ask for the document by its full title or paste its link. If it still fails, note the exact error rather than assuming the document is missing.
